Sponsored
by the United States Embassy and Korean public libraries,
American Corners Korea is a joint partnership project
that promotes cooperation and understanding between the
United States and Korea by providing open, accurate, and
factual information about the United States in a variety
of formats to the Korean people

To support American Corners, the United States Embassy
provided furniture, computer and electronic equipment,
books, CD-ROMS, videos and DVDs for the library¡¯s use.
In addition, the Embassy will provide on-going training
for library staff, both in Korea and in the United States.
Each American Corner features a diverse collection of
English language books and materials about the United
States and is similar to a public library reference service.
All the American Corners are staffed by bilingual Korean
library personnel who will be available during regular
library hours to assist patrons interested in specific
information about the United States.
The collection includes reference books, works of fiction,
and commercial and government publications. Each American
Corner also features a computer with guided Internet
access, as well as audio and video materials and CD-ROMS.
The collection¡¯s design includes support for information
on English language instruction. It also includes student
advising materials, links to university, admissions,
and scholarship websites, TOEFL/SAT/GRE/GMAT test information,
and student visa information. American Corner also provides
resources about doing business in the United States.
In addition, American Corner in Korea will offer public
programs to make information about the United States
available to the Korean public. For example, the American
Corners plan to host speakers, workshops and meetings
and serve as a venue for locally generated programs
such as an American film series, English class, or educational
advising. The American Corner can also offer digital
video conferences with speakers from around the country
and around the world on a wealth of topics.

In addition to joining in the global network of other
American Corner libraries, the American Corners libraries
in Korea have plans to develop sister library relationships
with public libraries in the United States.
Following the February 5 opening in Busan and the March
19 opening in Daegu and Gwangju, with future locations
planned for other cities.
